Which should you take first?
Take Salesforce Administrator if:
- You are new to Salesforce entirely
- Your role involves users, data, security, or reports
- You want the most widely required Salesforce credential
- You are building a foundation for all future certifications
Take Platform App Builder if:
- You already hold the Admin certification
- You build Lightning pages, flows, or custom apps regularly
- You want a fast second cert with high overlap to your existing knowledge
- You are planning toward the Architect certification path
Our Recommendation: Start with Salesforce Administrator
Always take Administrator first. It is the required foundation — App Builder explicitly builds on ADM-201 content, and many employers list Admin as a prerequisite for App Builder roles. Attempting App Builder without Admin knowledge is the most common reason candidates fail.
Side-by-Side Comparison

Which One Should You Take First?
- Choose ADM-201 first if you are new to Salesforce or preparing for admin-focused roles.
- Choose DEV-402 next if you want to build custom applications after mastering admin fundamentals.
- For most candidates, the best path is ADM-201 -> DEV-402 -> Advanced Administrator or Consultant tracks.
Career Outcome & Salary Differences
ADM-201 signals readiness for day-to-day Salesforce administration: user setup, access controls, standard automation, data integrity, and reporting. App Builder validates that you can design and build custom apps with stronger declarative architecture skills.
ADM-201 (Administrator)
- Salesforce Admin: $70–95k
- Senior Admin: $90–125k
- Most job postings require this cert first
- Faster path to employment
DEV-402 (App Builder) — added to ADM-201
- Solution Designer / Functional Consultant: $95–130k
- Opens Consultant & Architect certification paths
- Valued for custom app delivery roles
- App Builder alone (without Admin) is less common
If your immediate goal is to get into Salesforce operations roles quickly, ADM-201 gives faster job-market relevance. Adding DEV-402 after ADM-201 typically adds $15–25k to salary range and unlocks Consultant-track opportunities.
Decision Matrix: Which Certification Fits You?
| Your Situation | Choose This Cert |
|---|---|
| New to Salesforce, no prior admin experience | ADM-201 first |
| Already working as a Salesforce Admin (6+ months) | DEV-402 (App Builder) |
| Want to build custom apps without writing code | DEV-402 (App Builder) |
| Targeting Salesforce Admin or Business Analyst roles | ADM-201 first |
| Pursuing the Architect certification path later | DEV-402 — it is an Architect path prerequisite |
| Career switcher with no Salesforce background | ADM-201 first — broadest job-market entry point |
